Mauritius is in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Let the sun kiss your skin or discover the interior culture of the country. The island is 2040 km in area and has 1600 km streets surrounded by Bougainvilleas and flame trees, violet, moon-shaped mountain landscapes, deep crates, dense forests, small torrents, rivers, waterfalls, colorful flowers and trees growing out of the red soil and green-yellow sugar-cane-fields everywhere!

Mauritius isn't only the gem of the Indian Ocean but an island with atmosphere and multicultural history. Every European state which once had a merchant fleet left its mark on it. It was discovered by the Portuguese arround 1510. In 1598 the Dutch fell in love with that island, occupied it and named it "Maurits" (Moritz, Duke of Oranien). The French came in 1715 and called it "Ile de France". This happened to be long-lasting, about 100 years. However, after several sea battles with the English they got sent back to France. Although Mauritius was given back its name by the English they brought slavery onto the island. Mauritius didn't become independent until 1968 and on 12 March 1992 the Republic of Mauritius was founded. Besides the political system the islanders also took over the driving on the left and the school system from the British. Mauritius has a population of 1.1 million. Port-Louis (map) is the capital...
