Mauritius isn't only the gem of the Indian Ocean but an island with atmosphere and multicultural history. Every European state which once had a merchant fleet left its mark on it. It was discovered by the Portuguese around 1510. In 1598 the Dutch fell in love with that island, occupied it and named it "Maurits" (Moritz, Duke of Oranien). The French came in 1715 and called it "Ile de France". The name remained for about 100 years. However, after several sea battles with the English the French were banished. Although Mauritius was given back its name by the English, they brought slavery onto the island. Mauritius didn't become independent until 1968 and on 12 March 1992 the Republic of Mauritius was founded.
